Happy September!! I’m so glad that 2020 is more than half way over! What a year it’s been!!
Today is LET’S LOOK!! This month we’re looking at our school pictures!!
Let me give you a little background….I’m an only child who grew up in the good old days in IOWA, and sailed through high school in the 1980’s!! We ROCKED!!!
Preschool. (Age 3) I hated every minute of it. This is where my love of being a HOMEBODY showed up first!! Can you find me? Bottom row, 2nd from the left.
Preschool- age 4- I graduated with many of these friends!! I honestly can’t remember anything about that year!! I’m in the middle row, 3rd from the right. The girl next to me looks like a little china doll!!
Let’s look at Kindergarten through 2nd grade.
Kindergarten- Hmmmm. As you can see in my Kindergarten photo, I was rockin’ a handmade shirt with rick rack. You would never know that this sweet little girl used to ride the city bus to school and would ride around the block, ding the bell and run back home. I think homeschooling would have been a good thing for me!!
First Grade (middle photo) I know you can’t see it, but there was the coolest lady bug on my dress!!
Second Grade (right) Cutest pigtails and handmade dress by my Mom.
I’m seeing a theme here….red, white & blue….and the red yarn bows!!
3rd Grade (left)- This is my favorite school photo ever!! I LOVED those overalls!! And I think those previously missing teeth have grown in!! I remember it was such a fun year in school! I was hitting my groove!
4th Grade (middle)- Busy, busy dress, but hey, my Mom curled my hair to make me look so grown up!!
5th Grade (right)- Are you counting how many turtle necks I’ve worn? We’re up to 4 now. Maybe this was considered a cowl neck…whatever! Did I mention that I have straight, very fine hair? It sure shows in this picture. I didn’t care, I was “Ruling the school” as a 5th grader!! Fun fact, one of my teachers was named Mrs. Butts. Imagine the fun we had with that! She was a nice teacher though!!
6th Grade (left)- After ruling the school the year before, I went back to being a little fish in a big pond, as I was mixed into a group of new kids at the middle school. Yep, back to the red and blue theme. and #turtleneck. It probably was NOT to hide hickeys!!
7th Grade (middle)- Guess who got a PERM?? I think this was the Farrah Fawcett hairdo- that’s the look I was going for!! Look at the Lip gloss…looking good, Miss Jilly!!
8th grade (right)- Ruling the school as an 8th grader…loving life, running track, playing volleyball & basketball. My Mom cut my hair into the “Lady Diana” style!! Love watching the evolution of hair styles!! Just wait….
9th Grade (left)- I had the unique experience of being the last class in a school that was being shut down. All of the middle schools in town sent their freshman here. It was really a great time of getting to know the kids in our class! I tried out for cheer leading and made the squad!! WOOT!! This ALSO was the year that I rode my moped to school. That sounds really cool and all, BUT I bungie corded an alto saxophone case on the back- NOT so cool!! BTW, I borrowed that shirt in the photo from my neighbor!! Hehe!
10th Grade (middle)- Moved on to the BIG High School. Looks as though I started accessorizing AND wearing make up. Gave up the moped for a White Oldsmobile Cutless Supreme Brougham. It had the BIGGEST and heaviest 2 doors that I have ever seen, or shut. I didn’t mind, it played my Prince, Van Halen & Quiet Riot tapes really loud!! I loved cheerleading and was often busy at Friday night football games, so this really nice guy would work for me at Athlete’s Inn shoe store. (Spoiler Alert: I later married him!)
11th Grade (rightt)- Looks like another perm came to rescue my flat hair. I felt happy during the school year, except in gym class when we had to run the mile. NOT my favorite. My goal was to run 2 laps, then walk 2. I took the “C” grade and moved on. With my elective credits, I LOVED being an assistant in the Counseling office, delivering notes and stapling papers together to help out. Can you believe some of my friends actually took extra Math classes?? No, thank you.
12th Grade (both)- WOO HOO!! I made it through high school! Did anyone else schedule study halls at the beginning and end of the day so you could go in late and leave early?? YUP, I did!!
As a senior, I took a class that changed my life trajectory forever…Marriage and Family Living. I loved the teacher (Hi Linda!) (and she was pregnant at the time) and watching her belly grow, learning about family dynamics, and child development. I loved every bit of the class! It just sparked JOY and PASSION in me. I went off to college and got my degree in Elementary Education, but I sure wanted to work with the little ones. As I look back now, all I really wanted to do was to get married, and raise a family, which I am currently doing!! Dreams do come true!
I’m not sure, but can girls have mullets?? Asking for a friend…
Below are a few more beauties…some are kind of risque if you ask me!! Please take note of the red v-neck sweater from the Limited. I had to beg to buy it. I wanted to be like the cool kids!!
As usual, I’m linking up with Shay & Erika!!

Here’s the line up for the rest of the year!!
Well, what can I say! I loved this so much. Brought back a lot of memories for sure! You did such a nice job with the narrative. It all took me back through the years. Keep doing what you are doing. Lovely post and you nailed it!
Glad you have taken this ride right along with me! Love you!!!
What a wonderful walk down memory lane! I don’t think I could have added much of a narrative behind my pictures as I tend to have a pretty awful memory for things like that.
But I bet you had some awesome hairdos too, Joanne!!! xo
Oh yes! For sure; feathered bangs and all.
