Sundays are so fun this time of the year. Our mornings are slow, often reading the paper, drinking a hot beverage and catching up on the world wide web. Follow that up by church, Packers football, family time and a mid afternoon nap…that’s a good day in my book!!
Our typical tradition for years on Sunday has been to enjoy Subway for lunch so I have a day off from cooking and John would be in charge of dinner a.k.a. grilling something. Lately, our college son has been coming home on Sundays to go to church and enjoy the family but mostly just to use our laundry facilities (the price is right.) 😉 Because he has been making the effort to come home, I’ve tried to have a nice, home-cooked meal on the table for us all to share together at lunch. One of the meals that I make my family on Sundays is a recipe from my mother in law…we call it Grandma Ellie’s Chili. Not sure where she got the recipe, but it’s one of those tried and true “favorites” for us.
I’m happy to share the recipe- While I can’t guarantee a win, it sure tastes good when you’re watching your favorite football team play!
Here are all of the ingredients, all gathered together… (I doubled the recipe, so there are twice the ingredients pictured) *onion not pictured
Grandma Ellie’s Chili
Brown 1 pound of hamburger with 1 onion (chopped).
Drain off the grease and rinse with hot water (to remove fat)
Add: 1 quart of tomatoes (that’s 4 cups, and yes, I had to look that up)
1 (8 oz.) can of tomato sauce
1 can (15 oz.) of kidney beans (drained and rinsed)
1/2 t. dried basil
1 tsp. salt
pepper as needed (I don’t use pepper in the recipe, but you may want to)
2 T. chili powder
1 T. worchestershire sauce
1 green pepper, diced
Cook slowly, for 1-2 hours, covered. (Stir once in awhile)
Serve with crackers, sour cream, shredded cheese and/or noodles.
NOTE: I put mine in a crock pot on high for 4 hours. Started it Sunday morning and it was ready to go at game time- Noon!!
Do you want to know the really super cool part???
I have the recipe, in Grandma Ellie’s handwriting….. Good thing I laminated it….but it still has some love splattered on it!
