Do you ever have one of those drawers that just DRIVES YOU CRAZY?? One of those drawers is in my kitchen. I dread opening it or closing it…..sometimes it gets stuck as I open it and items may be hanging out after I close it.
I took a class last year through the rec. program that focused on decluttering your life. The woman asked an important question. What’s your magic number? I wasn’t sure what she meant by that…did she mean what’s your lucky number? Because that was an easy one to answer. She said in light of how often you do laundry, and how many fit in the drawer, how many do you really need ?
I decided to apply the magic number theory to this pesky drawer…..Here’s another look at the drawer…..this is a better view…
I started by taking everything out of the drawer….here it is, in all of it’s glory….
15 towels (YIKES)
12 washcloths
2 dish towels
Here’s my thought….do I seriously need 15 towels when I do laundry EVERY DAY? and some of those towels are looking pretty raggedy….and then there’s the wash cloths…it looks to me like some of these wash cloths belong in the bathroom, instead of the kitchen!! (Hooray for kids putting away laundry!)
I pared down and made a donate pile….I guess the humane society has a need for old towels, etc. Now, just look at this drawer…isn’t it nice and neat?
I don’t even cringe when I have to open it…..I pared down to 5 towels and 6 washcloths…it’s probably more than I actually need, but it all fits nicely, so I’m going with it!! So, I guess my magic number is 5 towels and 6 wash cloths!!! You can find towel number 5 here….
This magic number concept can be applied to ANYTHING!! My next project is going to be my sock drawer- it sure needs it!!
What will you declutter today??
This is great advice! Thanks for all the work you put into your blog
Thank YOU for taking the time to read my blog…I’m having fun!!
I need dish towels for drying….Guess I’m old school….Hope your idea gives me incentive to at least organize…Good job again, Ms. Jill!
Hi Mom…thanks for the comment! I may end up kicking myself for getting rid of the dish towels, but I know that I have another box of them in the basement if needed. We will see how it goes!!
I love reading your blogs, and yes I use you advice, I just cleanded out my junk drawer, in the kitchen. Use the same theory, I just wish my husband would use that idea. Spring is here and on rainy days, I start collecting for Good Will. Thanks for the advice…..
Happy Spring,
Great to hear from you, Danette!! It seems as though we always have a “Goodwill” bag going… feels good to get rid of things we don’t use!! Happy Spring to you too!
