Last Friday, we packed up the car, grabbed who was able to go, and made the trip to Iowa to visit Hubby’s parents. Unfortunately, only Hubs, Sweet Pea and I were able to go and we made the best of it.
We always know that we are getting close to our hometown (We both grew up there.) when we see the “H” bridge. It’s a welcoming site for all! Gma said the “H” stands for HELLO!!!
The town itself sits on the banks of the Mississippi and it’s just beautiful! The drive around the bluff is especially amazing with the river on one side and the bluff on the other! Watch out for falling rocks, though!!
We were welcomed with 90 degree temperatures, hugs, lots of sun and the buzzing of locusts!
Oh yes, and Sterzings potato chips!! We took a bag back…I wanted to take 3. (oink)
We enjoyed a home cooked meal at Gma’s house with goodies from the garden! We dug potatoes, picked cucumbers, and picked tomatoes!
We celebrated my in-laws 53rd Wedding Anniversary by having dinner out with my in-laws and Hubby’s Aunt and Uncle. (They’ve been married 63 years!) What a good looking crew!
While we’re there, we stay at a hotel so that we don’t inconvenience anyone. We seem to have a good time there!! Sweet Pea especially loves it because she’s tall enough to see out of the peep hole in the door AND they have make your own Belgian Waffles at the complimentary breakfast! Also, it’s always a family tradition to watch the home shopping channel. They’re always featuring Christmas items, all year ’round!
As we drove around town, I always stop by the house where I grew up. It looks absolutely wonderful! What a coincidence it was this week at home when I ran into a picture of the tree that I planted in that yard on Arbor Day, when I was in 4th grade! Just look how much it’s grown! Makes me smile!!
I always want to stop by, introduce myself and wander around the yard for old times sake. So many fond memories!
We ended the weekend celebration by attending church on Sunday with my in-laws and then taking off for home. I might add that we DID take advantage of the inexpensive gas while we were there! Fill ‘er up!!!!!
Little Sweet Pea kept busy on the ride home….she doesn’t mind the 5 hour drive!!

I did so enjoy your trip. Of course, it is always good to see pics from your former hometown. The bridge, the bluffs, (yes, watch our for falling rocks…and or boulders.Loved that you heard locusts. I miss that here. The Sterzings are always a treat and the goodies from the garden look yummy! Amazing that both of those fantastic couples have had so many wonderful years. Congratulations to the Anniversary couple! It was really something special to see how much the tree has grown. Woow! I am impressed. And Sweet Pea is really talented with her string. I can only make “a cup and saucer”! Way to go, girlfriend. Thanks for the journey back to River City….I really enjoyed it!
Thanks for this Jill! Always a nice surprise to see my P’s out and about. My uncle on “the other side”posted a pic of them with my mom’s siblings this week – they have had a very social week! They very much like being around your children- mom always says “they are the most well-mannered children”. Pretty sure no one said that about me- ever! Oh- and now I am craving Sterzings.
