Raise your hand if unloading the dishwasher is something you LOVE to do! (Insert crickets chirping…)
Me neither! If I have to do it, I want to get it over with in a flash!! Although we didn’t have a dishwasher when we were first married, I still have at least 20 years of dishwasher unloading experience behind me! Let me share a few tips to get it done FAST!
I LOVE these dishes by Corelle! We’ve had them almost 24 years – they haven’t stained or broken, they’re amazing! Another great thing is that they are light weight. I can just grab a bunch in the dishwasher like this and pull them all out at the same time. I set then set the plates on the counter above the dishwasher.
Same with the bowls. Grab and stack on counter.
After putting these items away, I head to the silverware compartment. I set it on the counter above my silverware drawer, grab a handful…
and sort it as fast as I can above the drawer-until it’s empty!
It’s nice that our kitchen design has the silverware drawer right across from the dishwasher- that speeds up the time too!
Now, on to the top rack! The top rack always take most of my time because there is such a variety of items to unload!
In case you wondered, this is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves….glasses with bottoms that collect water- ugh!!!
I first put away all of the drinking glasses that belong in the cabinet above the silverware drawer. Next, I stack all of the kid cups that belong across the room.
I gather all of the mugs by the handle and put them in their home, and put away the measuring cup and custard cup.
DONE!
If you REALLY HATE unloading the dishwasher, here are some other tips.
- Make it a game- play “beat the clock.” Set a timer for 3 minutes and see if you can beat it!
- Unload the dishwasher during the commercials of your favorite show!
- Play upbeat music while you unload!
- MY PERSONAL FAVORITE…..Delegate the job to one of your kids!! AMEN!

Since I have Corelle too, that is my method. Love that they are so lightweight. You are smart to wait and unload the top last. You don’t get the water from the indented glasses and cups on your plates, silverware, etc. I have to remind myself to unload in that order to prevent wet silverware and plates. Haven’t used the timer, though. I’ll have to do that. Nice work!! Thanks!
My dishes are too heavy to do this, but it’s a great idea to stack everything on the counter and put it away all at once. Better yet, my kids and hubby empty the dishwasher because I always load. Love your tips!
What a great post, I love how you really broke everything down. So helpful! Thanks for linking up and I will be featuring you on Monday as one of my FAVES! 🙂
I do this job the exact same way! I have to admit, I do like emptying the dishwasher, if only because it can be done so efficiently. Now hand-washing pots and pans is a different story 🙂
