Hello, Hello, again!! Please let me interrupt your Summer vacation to ask you a school related question, OK?? I promise it won’t be test and you won’t be graded!! LOL!!
Do YOU pay your kids for getting certain grades in school?
In our case, I don’t ever remember paying our kids for their grades, but it may have happened once or twice when I caved to the peer pressure!! Ha!!
Here are our thoughts on the subject:
- Kids need to be internally motivated to do well for themselves, and paying them seems like it’s an external reward.
- I know in studies it does help those kids who are less motivated to improve their grades, but it only works for a short period of time.
- Also, if you have 4 bright kids, you might go broke paying everyone for their grades!
So, I guess in our case, we chose NOT to pay for grades.
Yes, I did hear how unfair that was, and that so and so got $50 for each “A” on their report card. Sometimes just a dinner out or a simple ice cream cone was a way that we celebrated a job well done in school.
How do YOU feel about this subject?? Leave me a comment, please!!!
YES, everything that you said. We would have had to take out a mortgage on the house to pay for grades!! Thankful we were blessed with academically gifted children & glad we held to a kind word and praise for a job well done. It was hard not to cave in to the worldly ways and they learned early on that the motivation must come from within. On a similar topic, we didn’t pay for chores but we did give hard earned cash for extra jobs that required some assistance and went above and beyond the normal day to day stuff.
We sure line up in our ways of thinking!! You both did a wonderful job parenting- you have awesome kids!! Thanks for the comment!!!
$50 for an A? That reminds me of some kids that get $20 for a tooth from the tooth fairy. Next they’ll find a Roth IRA under their pillow. I remember getting paid for good grades. What I spend for just church travel and a mission trip this summer is enough. I’m glad the kids are doing well in school.
