A reader asks: I want to make cookies, but my butter isn’t soft. How can I soften it quickly?
This has happened to me countless times! I want to eat the dough make cookies, but my butter is still as hard as a rock. I’ve tried a number of ways, but none have given me the result I want! Waaah!
Recently, I tried a method that I saw on Pinterest and it actually worked! HOORAY!
Here’s what I did.
*Please deactivate the turn table on the microwave before trying this!
- Set your stick of butter on end and heat on high in the microwave for 5 seconds.
- Take butter out, flip to the other end and microwave on high for 5 seconds.
- This time lay butter on it’s side and microwave on high for 4 seconds.
- Take butter out and lay it on the opposite side and microwave on high for 4 seconds.
Butter should be soft enough to add to the mixer for your batch of cookies! Because microwave ovens vary, you may have to add 3 or 4 more seconds to get it just right. Be careful that you don’t over do it, or you’ll end up with a melted mess!!
Good Luck!!!

Good info. That is the way I usually do it, but not with such accuracy. I must remember the 5-5-4-4- method. Thought you might be telling us your old-fashioned method of softening the butter…..=)
Now maybe I can do this without completely melting my butter! Thanks!
